Studying Medicine abroad: find out what it is like to study this area outside Brazil and what are the five best places in the world to study Medicine

The medical profession is essential in modern society, so, logically, medical courses are longer, more demanding, and, in general, are among the most challenging and competitive paths to be undertaken. Few areas depend so heavily on self-confidence, the absolute commitment to the profession, and the desire to make a difference in people’s lives.

Studying Medicine abroad

Those choosing to pursue a medical degree will need a strong interest in the sciences, along with a passion for helping others – and it is a combination of these two factors that provides the necessary motivation to continue the many years of training required to become a fully functional qualified doctor.

Given the prestige associated with the medical professions and the extremely challenging nature of most careers in the field, it is not surprising that entry to medical school is extremely competitive, even when studying abroad.

To obtain a place in a top medical school, you must demonstrate exceptional grades in scientific disciplines (especially chemistry and biology) as well as evidence of commitment to the field. This usually means gaining work experience, perhaps in a local health center, private practice, or another type of health care facility such as a nursing home.

Great challenges and practical experience

If you’ve managed to get the grades and work experience you need to secure a place on a medical course, then you’re likely used to hard work. Despite this, you will need to be prepared for even greater challenges during your studies and in the years to come. This profession can be demanding, both intellectually and emotionally, with an intensive and time-consuming workload.

In addition to allowing you to specialize in a specific division, medical courses also provide students with the practical skills needed for specialized tasks (from blood collection to complex surgical procedures) and the personal skills needed to interact with patients and families.

Many of the top medical schools today consider practical development a major focus of their programs. This means that, in addition to attending seminars and lectures, you will have the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals and, increasingly, begin to gain practical experience.

Finally, it is important to remember that medical training is structured differently in each country, and medical qualifications obtained in one country are not necessarily recognized in others. Therefore, before deciding on a location for your medical studies, think carefully about where you would like to work and the process required to complete your qualification.

The best medical schools in the world

Find out below which is the best medical school in the world!

Oxford University

Medicine at Oxford University is a traditional course divided into pre-clinical and clinical stages. In the early years, students learn theoretically, with little contact with the patient, and in later years, they move into the clinical phase, spending much more time at John Radcliffe Hospital.

About 150 students are admitted to the course each year, and another 30 to the graduate course condenses medical studies into just four years. The university has two main libraries of medicine and clinical studies, one providing resources for the pre-clinical elements of the course and the other focusing on health.

In addition to its unique course, Oxford offers students the experience of university life, where social events and workshops take place.

  1. Cambridge University

As at Oxford University, students can enroll in an undergraduate medical course at Cambridge University.

Graduates also have several options for studying medicine, whether in an accelerated graduate program or a condensed version of preclinical and clinical courses. The competition is six candidates per place in medicine courses, and about 260 are accepted in general.

Half of Cambridge medical graduates will become general practitioners, and nearly all will work for the National Health Service in the UK.

Entry to medical school requires excellent secondary qualifications and high scores on the BMAT test. Cambridge students, particularly medical students, have a busy schedule, juggling studies, college social events, and various recreational activities.

  1. Harvard University

Harvard University Graduate School of Medicine has three missions: educating, researching, and providing clinical care. Founded in 1782, it is the third-oldest medical school in the US. The school’s faculty also teach in other science departments at Harvard and work in clinical departments at some of the university’s affiliated hospitals.

There are four major teaching hospitals throughout the Boston area. Harvard introduced problem-based learning to the curriculum and a specialized program accepting just 30 applicants each year that focuses on biomedical research.

Harvard medical students belong to one of five named alumni societies. Members work in small groups within society, compete in sports games and participate in social events.

How to study Medicine in the United States?

  1. Imperial College London

Imperial College London’s medical program offers a range of teaching approaches, from traditional lectures to innovative, hands-on experiences. From the beginning, students have direct contact with patients, unlike other more traditional universities in the UK.

The six-year medical degree also includes a Bachelor of Science in addition to the MBBS. Like Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial’s courses are highly scientific, with an emphasis not just on clinical practice but on research techniques.

Admission requirements are strict. Accepted students are expected to have high grades in chemistry, biology, and a third subject and achieve a high score on the BMAT exam. The application process also includes an interview.

Imperial is one of the UK’s most international institutions, but only a few international students are accepted into the medical program each year.

  1. Stanford University

Stanford University’s Graduate School offers master’s and doctoral programs for students who wish to continue their medical education. Seven Nobel Prize winners, 31 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 42 members of the Institute of Medicine are among the current faculty at the school.

Stanford Medicine researchers are researching several areas, including cancer, immunology, genetics, and neuroscience. The school also provides health services for adults and children, with a dedicated center for children only.
